The Reserve Bank of India's latest report indicates that the adverse effects of weak monsoon on rural India are diminishing as the economy becomes more diversified. The report highlights reduced vulnerability of rural livelihoods to rainfall variability.
The Reserve Bank of India released a report examining how monsoon variability affects rural India.
It found that the negative impact of a weak monsoon on rural livelihoods has eased as the rural economy has diversified beyond agriculture.
Growth in non‑farm sectors such as manufacturing, services and trade has reduced households’ reliance on rain‑fed farming.
The RBI concludes that continued diversification will help insulate rural incomes from future monsoon shocks.
