Actress Rakul Preet Singh described her portrayal of Surpanakha as a nuanced, misunderstood character, emphasizing the depth she brings to the mythological role.
Rakul Preet Singh, who has been cast as Surpanakha in the upcoming television adaptation of the Ramayana, said the demoness is often viewed through a one‑dimensional lens. In an interview with The Indian Express, she explained that her approach aims to highlight the character’s layered motivations and the societal forces that shape her actions. Singh emphasized that portraying Surpanakha offers an opportunity to explore themes of gender bias and marginalisation within the epic narrative.
The actress added that the role required her to move beyond the traditional villainous portrayal and instead present a figure with genuine emotions and grievances. She noted that the script provides space for Surpanakha’s perspective, allowing viewers to reconsider her place in the story.
Production teams have confirmed that the series will retain the classic storyline while integrating contemporary sensibilities, and Singh’s performance is expected to be a focal point of audience discussion when the show premieres later this year.
