The urban local bodies in Rajasthan are reporting significantly lower income compared to their expenditure, creating a financial crunch for newly elected municipal councils. They now face the dual challenge of boosting revenue and reducing dependence on state grants while pursuing development works.

Recent assessments show that Rajasthan's urban local bodies generate far less revenue than their annual expenditure, leaving a sizable gap in their budgets.

The newly elected municipal councils, which took office after the latest local body elections, must now address this imbalance before they can launch new infrastructure or welfare projects.

Officials say the priority will be to explore additional sources of income such as property tax revision, user fees, and public‑private partnerships, while seeking to trim reliance on state government grants.
