Rajasthan's Uniform Civil Code Proposal Aims to Redefine Marriage, Live‑in and Inheritance Laws

The Rajasthan government has prepared a draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) that would replace religion‑specific personal laws with a single set of rules governing marriage, live‑in relationships and inheritance. The draft proposes that all residents, irrespective of faith, follow the same legal framework for registering marriages, recognizing cohabitation and distributing property after death. Officials say the move is intended to promote gender equality and reduce legal complexities that arise from multiple personal law systems. The proposal is currently under review by the state cabinet and is expected to be tabled in the legislative assembly later this month.
