The Rajasthan government’s rollout of a digital fertiliser tracking system has been met with sharp criticism from opposition parties, who question its implementation and impact on farmers.

The state government of Rajasthan has introduced a digital platform intended to monitor the distribution and usage of fertilisers across the state. The system, which links fertiliser purchases to farmer IDs, aims to curb illegal sales, ensure timely supply, and improve crop yields.

Opposition leaders, however, have publicly denounced the scheme, arguing that it could increase the bureaucratic burden on farmers and lack adequate safeguards for data privacy. They claim the rollout was rushed without sufficient consultation with farmer groups.

In response, the agriculture department defended the initiative, stating that pilot testing in select districts showed a reduction in black‑market transactions and that training sessions are being organised for farmers to ease the transition.

The debate is expected to continue in the state assembly, with the opposition demanding a review of the system’s design before it is expanded statewide.
