In Rajasthan's municipal elections, a dispute over the ward reservation lottery in Dungarpur has prompted the BJP to lodge a formal objection.
Rajasthan’s municipal elections are underway with the reservation lottery for 10,245 wards across 309 urban bodies being conducted. In the town of Dungarpur, a controversy has erupted over the process of allocating reserved seats for scheduled castes and tribes.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally raised objections, citing concerns that the lottery procedure may not be transparent and could affect the fair distribution of seats. The party’s complaint comes as the state government prepares to announce the final list of reserved wards.
While the dispute is centered in Dungarpur, the state is also finalising reservations in other major cities: Jodhpur will have 100 reserved wards, Udaipur 80, Kota 100 and Ajmer 80. The elections are scheduled to conclude with the allocation of seats by the end of the month.
Election officials have assured that the lottery will be conducted in accordance with the Rajasthan Municipal Corporation Act, and that all parties will be given an opportunity to review the results before they are published.
