The Rajasthan Uniform Civil Code Bill introduces a provision that live‑in partners who conceal their marriage can face up to five years in jail for deception.
The Rajasthan Legislative Assembly has incorporated a new clause in the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill that targets live‑in partners who hide the fact that they are married. Under the provision, any couple that pretends to be in a live‑in relationship while concealing a legal marriage may be charged with deception.
The law stipulates a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment, along with a monetary fine, for those found guilty of such concealment. The penalty is intended to deter fraudulent claims that could affect property rights, inheritance and welfare benefits.
Legal analysts note that the amendment aligns with the state’s broader effort to standardise personal laws, but they also warn that it may raise privacy concerns and could be difficult to enforce without clear evidence of intent.
The Rajasthan government has said the measure will be implemented once the Bill receives the governor’s assent, and it will be monitored by the state’s law‑enforcement agencies to ensure compliance.
