The Rajasthan state administration has amended service rules to provide a 180‑day maternity leave for female staff who undergo a recognized surrogacy procedure.
Jaipur, Rajasthan – In a landmark policy shift, the state government announced that women employed in the public sector will be entitled to a full 180 days of maternity leave when they opt for a legally recognized surrogacy arrangement. The amendment to the existing service rules was approved by the state cabinet and will come into effect from the next financial year.
The new provision aligns Rajasthan's employee welfare framework with recent national discussions on reproductive rights and aims to support women who choose surrogacy as a safe alternative to traditional pregnancy. It applies only to surrogacy procedures that meet the criteria set by the central Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, ensuring compliance with legal standards.
Officials said the decision reflects the government's commitment to gender‑sensitive workplace policies and will be communicated to all state departments through official circulars. The department of personnel will oversee implementation and address any queries from staff.
Labor unions welcomed the move, noting that extended leave will help reduce the financial and health pressures faced by women undergoing surrogacy. The policy also includes provisions for salary continuation and job security throughout the leave period.
