Sunel village in Rajasthan recorded a record 300mm rainfall, prompting authorities to open gates of Kalisindh and Chhapi dams and close schools in Jhalawar district.

Sunel, a village in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district, experienced an extraordinary 300mm of rainfall in a single day, setting a new local record. The deluge has caused rapid rises in nearby water bodies, prompting the state water authorities to open the gates of the Kalisindh and Chhapi dams to release excess water.

In response to the rising water levels, the Jhalawar district administration has shut down all schools to ensure the safety of students and staff. The closures are expected to remain in effect until the water levels subside and the area is deemed safe.

Local officials have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid traveling on low-lying roads. The Rajasthan Disaster Management Authority has deployed emergency teams to monitor the situation and provide assistance to affected households.

While the immediate focus is on preventing further flooding, authorities are also preparing for potential downstream impacts on neighboring districts. Residents are advised to follow official advisories and seek shelter if necessary.
