Rain hampers cremations in Banswala as lack of permanent ghats forces open‑air rites

Heavy rain in Banswara forced families to perform open‑air cremations after the lack of a permanent cremation ground left them with no shelter.
Heavy showers swept across Banswara on Tuesday, bringing much‑needed relief to farmers but creating a serious problem for families conducting last rites. The downpour made it impossible to use the makeshift burial sites, and the flames of the funeral pyres were constantly threatened by the rain.
Because the town does not have a permanent cremation ghats, mourners from the villages of Jaanamedi and Chitra Dongri were compelled to set up temporary pyres on open ground. The lack of a sheltered area forced the bodies to be burnt in the open, exposing the rites to the elements.
Local residents have now intensified calls for the authorities to construct a permanent, weather‑proof cremation ground in Banswara. Community leaders say that such a facility would prevent future disruptions of religious ceremonies during the monsoon season.
