Indian Railways has approved a Rs 233 crore fund to replace panel interlocking with modern electronic interlocking at 21 stations in the Samastipur division of Bihar.
The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned a capital outlay of Rs 233 crore to upgrade signalling infrastructure at twenty‑one stations under the Samastipur division of East Central Railway in Bihar. The project will replace the existing panel interlocking systems with state‑of‑the‑art electronic interlocking, which offers faster train routing and enhanced safety.
Electronic interlocking uses computer‑based control to manage track switches and signals, reducing manual errors and allowing higher line capacity. The upgrade is part of a broader push to modernise the Indian railway network and improve punctuality on busy routes.
Implementation will be overseen by the railway’s engineering department, with work expected to commence in the coming months. Once completed, the stations will benefit from more reliable operations and a reduced risk of signal failures.
The funding also aligns with the government’s focus on infrastructure development in the region, aiming to boost connectivity and support economic growth in Bihar.
Stakeholders, including local commuters and freight operators, anticipate smoother journeys and fewer delays as the new electronic interlocking system comes online.
