The 66‑year‑old Baruni freight yard in Begusarai has been closed from August 31 pending expansion work, with new freight bookings suspended.

The Indian Railways has ordered the closure of the Baruni freight warehouse in Begusarai, Bihar, effective from August 31. The facility, which has been operational for roughly 66 years, generated revenue of about ₹36 crore over the last 16 months.

The shutdown is linked to the ongoing upgrade of Baruni Junction under the national freight corridor project. Work includes extending the junction, constructing a shunting neck and laying a new stabling line, prompting the railway to suspend all new freight bookings at the yard until further notice.

The temporary halt affects local employment tied to the warehouse’s operations, raising concerns among workers about job security while the infrastructure enhancements are completed.

Railway officials have indicated that the closure will remain in place until the expansion works are finished and a subsequent order is issued to resume operations.
