Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the government has been adding excessive amounts of ethanol to petrol, calling for a review of fuel standards.

Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Indian National Congress, raised a new complaint today that the government has been adding more ethanol than permitted to petrol sold across the country. He said the excess could affect vehicle performance and consumer safety. The claim was made during a press briefing in New Delhi.

Ethanol is blended into petrol to reduce carbon emissions, but the Central Pollution Control Board sets a maximum limit for its content. According to Gandhi, the actual blend exceeds this limit, potentially violating environmental regulations.

The ruling party has not yet responded to the allegations. Industry bodies have urged the government to conduct an independent audit of fuel samples to verify the claim. If proven, the government may face pressure to tighten enforcement of fuel standards.

Gandhi called for a parliamentary committee to investigate the matter and to ensure that fuel quality remains within the prescribed norms. He warned that unchecked ethanol levels could harm consumers and the automotive sector.
