PVM Raises Objection to Assam's Land Law Over 'Original Inhabitant' Clause

PVM, a regional advocacy group, has formally flagged the Assam state government's recent land legislation, saying the clause that identifies "original inhabitants" could marginalise other communities. The law, passed by the Assam Legislative Assembly, aims to protect land rights of those considered indigenous, but PVM argues the criteria are vague and could be misused.

The organization warned that the provision may lead to legal disputes and social tension, urging the state to clarify the definition and ensure it aligns with constitutional guarantees. PVM's statement calls for a review of the clause before the law is implemented.

State officials have not yet responded to the group's concerns, and the matter is expected to be debated further in the assembly and possibly taken to the courts.
