Punjab's Power Shortfall: 2,173 MW Generation Stalled as Monsoon Fails to Fill Reservoirs

Rising electricity demand in Punjab has forced a 2,173‑megawatt generation unit to be taken offline, as weak monsoon rains have lowered reservoir levels.

Punjab's power grid is under increasing strain as electricity consumption climbs across the state. Officials report that a generation block capable of producing 2,173 megawatts has been temporarily shut down to balance supply with the surge in demand.

The shutdown is linked to abnormally low water levels in the state's major reservoirs. This season's monsoon rains have been erratic and below average, reducing the water available for hydro‑electric and cooling processes at thermal plants.

State electricity department officials warned that prolonged shortfalls could lead to scheduled load‑shedding in several districts if alternative power sources are not secured. They are monitoring the situation closely and have appealed to consumers to conserve electricity during peak hours.

To mitigate the gap, Punjab is coordinating with neighboring states for power imports and exploring short‑term arrangements with private generators. The department will provide updates as the monsoon outlook and reservoir data evolve.
