Since 2013, Punjabi-origin participation in British Columbia politics has grown steadily. This election cycle, 40 candidates of Punjabi descent are contesting various seats.
The involvement of the Punjabi community in British Columbia’s political landscape began to noticeably increase around 2013. Over the years, more individuals of Punjabi origin have stepped forward to seek public office, moving beyond voting to active candidacy.
In the ongoing election, approximately forty candidates who identify with Punjabi heritage have filed their nominations. They are contesting across different constituencies, reflecting a broader trend of community engagement.
This surge underscores the growing political confidence and representation aspirations of the Punjabi diaspora in Canada, marking a significant shift from passive participation to direct electoral involvement.
