The Punjab Meteorological Department reported that rainfall during the first 24 days of August fell 26% short of the long‑term average. The shortfall was identified through data collected from a network of rain gauges across the state.
Based on the deficit, the department placed thirteen districts – Kapurthala, Tarn Taran and eleven others – in the red‑zone category, signalling severe water stress. Local authorities have been advised to monitor groundwater levels and prioritize water‑conservation measures.
Agricultural experts warn that the below‑normal precipitation could affect sowing schedules and crop yields, especially for water‑intensive crops such as rice and wheat. The state government is expected to review irrigation plans and may consider emergency relief for affected farmers.
