Punjab authorities logged 2,787 instances of stubble burning this year, levying a total of Rs 46.10 lakh in fines to curb the practice.

Punjab’s agricultural department recorded 2,787 cases of stubble burning during the current season, a figure that highlights the persistence of the practice despite ongoing bans. The state government imposed a cumulative fine of Rs 46.10 lakh on farmers and contractors found violating the stubble burning prohibition.
The fines were collected under the Punjab State Pollution Control Board’s enforcement guidelines, which aim to reduce air pollution and improve public health. Officials noted that the penalties serve as a deterrent, encouraging farmers to adopt alternative residue management methods.
The crackdown follows national and international pressure to curb stubble burning, a major contributor to winter smog in northern India. Punjab’s enforcement action is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable farming practices across the state.
