The Punjab state government has identified technical errors in the newly released Bhakra‑Pong rule curves, warning that they could affect water distribution for irrigation.
The Punjab Water Resources Department has formally highlighted shortcomings in the recently issued Bhakra‑Pong rule curves, which are used to determine the volume of water released from the Bhakra Dam for downstream irrigation.
According to the department’s notice, the revised curves contain mis‑aligned calculations that do not reflect the actual river flow patterns observed over the past decade, potentially leading to an uneven allocation of water among canal networks.
The Central Water Commission has been asked to review the data and issue corrected curves before the upcoming monsoon season. Officials said a joint technical committee will be set up to resolve the discrepancies and ensure that farmers receive their entitled share.
If the flaws are not rectified, the state fears reduced water availability for its extensive wheat and rice belt, which could impact crop yields and farmer incomes.
