Punjab has announced that Artificial Intelligence will become a core subject for students from class 1 to 12, aiming to embed AI education across the state’s schools.
Punjab’s education department has introduced Artificial Intelligence as a mandatory subject for all classes from kindergarten to class 12. The decision is part of a broader initiative to modernise the curriculum and prepare students for a technology-driven future.
Under the new policy, AI will be taught alongside existing subjects, with a curriculum designed to be age‑appropriate for younger learners and progressively more advanced for higher grades. Teachers will receive training to deliver the content effectively.
The move follows a national trend of incorporating STEM subjects in schools, but Punjab is the first state to make AI a compulsory core subject across all grades. Officials say the change will help students develop critical thinking, problem‑solving skills and a foundational understanding of machine learning and data science.
The government plans to roll out the curriculum in the upcoming academic year, with pilot programmes already underway in selected schools. The initiative is expected to align Punjab’s education system with global standards in technology education.
