Punjab has become the first Indian state to mandate Artificial Intelligence as a compulsory subject for all students from Class 1 to 12, signalling a major shift in the state’s education policy.

Punjab’s Department of Education announced that Artificial Intelligence will now be a mainstream subject across all schools in the state, starting from the first year of primary education.
The decision aims to equip students with future‑ready skills and align the curriculum with the growing demand for AI literacy in India’s digital economy.
Under the new scheme, teachers will receive specialized training and schools will be provided with digital resources to integrate AI concepts into everyday learning.
The policy will be implemented in phases, with pilot programmes beginning in selected schools before a full rollout across the state.
Officials say the initiative will also encourage local tech startups to collaborate with schools, fostering a practical learning environment for students.
