Punjab Leads India: AI Declared Core Curriculum for All Grades

Punjab has become the first Indian state to mandate artificial intelligence as a compulsory subject for students from kindergarten to high school, signalling a shift towards tech‑centric education.
The Punjab Education Department announced that artificial intelligence will be a mandatory subject for students from Class 1 to 12, effective from the next academic year. The move makes Punjab the first state in India to embed AI into the mainstream curriculum.
The new syllabus will integrate AI concepts with existing subjects such as mathematics and science, and teachers will receive specialized training to deliver the content. The curriculum aims to equip students with foundational knowledge in machine learning, data analytics and ethical use of technology.
Education experts have welcomed the initiative, citing potential boosts in digital literacy and future employability. However, some stakeholders have raised concerns about the availability of qualified teachers and the need for adequate infrastructure.
Implementation will begin with a pilot phase in selected schools, with a full rollout planned for the 2025‑26 academic year.
