Punjab launches distribution of 1.26 crore health cards offering up to ₹10 lakh free treatment

The Punjab health ministry has begun issuing 1.26 crore health cards that cover expensive procedures such as dialysis, cancer care and transplants, with a ceiling of ₹10 lakh per beneficiary.
Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh announced that the state government has started handing out 1.26 crore health cards across Punjab, marking the rollout of a large‑scale public‑health initiative.
The cards are designed to subsidise high‑cost medical services, including dialysis, cancer treatment, cardiac surgeries, knee replacements, cataract operations, C‑sections and organ transplants.
Each beneficiary can claim treatment worth up to ₹10 lakh per year, a move aimed at reducing out‑of‑pocket expenses for low‑ and middle‑income families.
The scheme will be implemented through a network of government hospitals and empanelled private clinics, with eligibility determined by income and residency criteria.
Officials expect the programme to improve access to critical care and lower the financial burden of serious illnesses in the state.
