The Punjab Home Department has issued a notification activating the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT‑NDPS) Act of 1988 to curb illegal drug trade in the state.

The Home Department of Punjab has formally issued a notification bringing the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT‑NDPS) Act, 1988, into force across the state. The move is part of a broader anti‑drug strategy aimed at dismantling networks that traffic narcotics and psychotropic substances.

Under the act, law‑enforcement agencies are empowered to conduct raids, seize contraband, and prosecute individuals involved in the illegal drug trade. The notification outlines procedural guidelines for investigations, evidence collection, and the establishment of special courts to expedite trials.

State officials said the enforcement will focus on known trafficking corridors and suspected drug‑manufacturing hubs. While the act has been on the books for decades, its activation signals a renewed commitment by the Punjab government to curb drug abuse and related crime.

The Home Department has also directed police units to coordinate with central agencies and neighboring states to track cross‑border smuggling routes. The implementation is expected to strengthen legal deterrence and reduce the availability of illicit substances in Punjab.
