The Punjab High Court overturned a 2005 conviction, clearing a government clerk of a two‑year jail term and fine for allegedly taking a 200‑rupee bribe to purchase a buffalo.

In 2005, a lower court found a government clerk guilty of accepting a bribe of 200 rupees to secure a loan for buying a buffalo. The judgment imposed two years of imprisonment and a fine of 2,000 rupees.

The Punjab High Court has now set aside that verdict, acquitting the clerk of all charges. The appellate bench concluded that the evidence did not substantiate the alleged corruption, leading to the reversal of the earlier sentence.

The decision ends a 21‑year legal saga for the clerk, who had been serving the conviction for over two decades. Legal observers note that the case highlights challenges in proving low‑value corruption allegations in Indian courts.
