Punjab has announced a scheme waiving power bills and providing direct cash assistance to residents amid economic relief measures.
Punjab’s government has rolled out a new relief package that will exempt residents from paying electricity bills for the next fiscal year. The move is part of a broader effort to ease the financial burden on households during a period of high inflation. In addition to the bill waiver, officials will distribute direct cash transfers to eligible families, ensuring immediate economic support.
The announcement was made by the state’s Chief Minister during a press briefing in Chandigarh. Officials said the scheme will be implemented through the Punjab State Electricity Board and the Department of Social Welfare. Eligibility criteria include income thresholds and registration with the state’s welfare database.
The government estimates that the initiative will benefit over two million households across the state, with an estimated budget allocation of ₹1.5 billion. It follows a series of measures aimed at boosting consumer confidence and stabilising local markets.
