The Punjab administration announced a reduction in workers' pension, justifying it with a claimed liability of ₹360 crore, while an audit shows the actual fiscal impact is only ₹4.4 crore.

The Punjab state government issued a notification cutting the pension benefits of its salaried workers, stating that the move is required to address a projected liability of about ₹360 crore. Officials said the reduction is part of a broader effort to stabilise the state’s finances amid rising fiscal pressures.

However, a recent financial audit conducted by the state’s finance department found that the actual cost of the pension scheme is far lower, amounting to roughly ₹4.4 crore. The audit questioned the magnitude of the liability cited in the government’s announcement and suggested that the cut may be disproportionate to the real fiscal burden.

Labor unions representing the affected employees have expressed concern over the abrupt reduction, warning that it could affect the livelihood of thousands of pensioners. The state government has indicated that the decision will be reviewed in light of the audit findings, but has not ruled out further adjustments to the pension structure.

Analysts view the episode as indicative of the challenges many Indian states face in balancing pension commitments with limited revenue streams. The Punjab administration is expected to present a detailed cost‑benefit analysis in the upcoming legislative session.
