Punjab’s Chief Minister has announced that the state government will issue 10 lakh new ration cards to expand food security coverage.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced today that the state government will issue 10 lakh new ration cards as part of its effort to broaden food security coverage.
The move follows a review of the state’s public distribution system, which identified gaps in the reach of the Public Distribution System (PDS) to eligible families.
The new cards will be rolled out over the next six months, with eligibility criteria based on income and existing ration card status. The government plans to use the updated database to streamline distribution and reduce duplication.
Officials expect the initiative to provide more families with subsidised food grains, thereby easing food insecurity and supporting the state’s welfare objectives.
