Protest on September 30 Against Unscientific NRBC Water-Rotation System in Jalahalli
Jalahalli, September 26: The Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha and village committees of the Water Users’ Association have announced a mass protest on September 30 at Ambedkar Circle, Jalahalli, opposing the unscientific water-rotation system being implemented in the Narayanapura Right Bank Canal (NRBC) area and demanding adequate electricity supply to farmers’ pump sets.
Speaking at a joint press conference held at the Tourist Rest House in Jalahalli, Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha Village Committee President Hanumantha Madiwal said farmers in the NRBC command area depend on canal water to cultivate chilli, cotton, paddy and other crops.
He said that due to inadequate rainfall and intense heat, there is already a shortage of moisture in the soil. Under these circumstances, the water-rotation system could cause serious damage to standing crops, he said.
The organisations demanded that the existing water-rotation system be immediately withdrawn and that steps be taken to ensure adequate canal water reaches the agricultural lands of farmers, including those at the tail-end of the canal.
They also demanded that farmers’ pump sets be provided with seven hours of continuous and quality electricity supply during daytime.
The leaders warned that if immediate measures are not taken to protect farmers’ crops, the agitation would be intensified.
Water Users’ Association President Shivaraj Yarakamattti, Secretary Bheemanna Dengi, Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha President Hanumantha Madiwal, Secretary Ranganath Bunkaldoddi, farmer leaders Siddappa Gumedar, Durugappa Horatti, Nandappa Maddi, Ramesh Ganji, Mallesh Rampalli, Srinivasa Reddy, Siddayya Yarakamattti, Mounesh, Muddayya, Shejanna, Siddappa Horatti and Guddayya Kattimani, along with KRV leaders Thammanna Herundi and Bheemanna Nayak, and journalists were present at the press conference.
