A new seismic observatory has been proposed to provide early warning of earthquakes, aiming to enhance disaster preparedness across India.

A seismic observatory is being planned to create a nationwide early‑warning network for earthquakes. The proposal, highlighted by Pioneer Edge, calls for a series of modern seismometers and real‑time data processing hubs that can detect tremors within seconds of their onset.

If implemented, the system would relay alerts to government agencies, emergency services and the public, giving people crucial minutes to take protective action before shaking begins.

Experts say that such early‑warning capability can reduce casualties and infrastructure damage, especially in seismically active regions of the country. The project is currently in the conceptual stage, pending approval and funding from relevant authorities.

Stakeholders anticipate that, once operational, the observatory will integrate with existing disaster‑management frameworks, strengthening India's overall resilience to seismic events.
