During a scheduled inspection at the Shri Ganganagar Central Jail in Rajasthan, prison authorities began a routine cell‑to‑cell search. The operation quickly turned volatile as a group of inmates voiced opposition to the sweep.
Amid the unrest, a prisoner seized a tea mug and struck a supervising jailer, inflicting a wound to the officer’s hand. Medical staff attended to the injury on site, and the jailer was reported to be in stable condition.
Law enforcement officials responded by filing criminal cases against multiple inmates involved in the disturbance. The police statement indicated that the charges pertain to assault on a public servant and rioting within a correctional facility.
The incident underscores ongoing challenges in maintaining order during routine security checks in Indian prisons, prompting calls for stricter oversight and better inmate‑staff communication.
