New Delhi – The Prime Minister unfurled the Namo Bharat flag in Meerut on Thursday, officially kicking off the government’s new scheme to strengthen indigenous manufacturing and create jobs across the country. The ceremony, held at the city’s municipal grounds, was attended by senior officials, local business leaders and representatives of trade unions.
In his address, the Prime Minister emphasized the programme’s focus on leveraging existing small‑ and medium‑scale enterprises, encouraging technology adoption, and linking them with larger supply chains. He announced an initial allocation of ₹12,000 crore for infrastructure upgrades and skill‑development centres in Uttar Pradesh, with Meerut earmarked as a pilot hub.
The launch coincides with the government’s broader "Make in India" drive and is expected to generate up to 1.5 million jobs over the next five years, according to ministry estimates. State officials said the project will prioritize sectors such as textiles, automotive components, and agro‑processing, which have a strong presence in the region.
Local entrepreneurs welcomed the initiative, noting that easier credit access and streamlined regulatory procedures could accelerate expansion plans. The Prime Minister concluded by urging citizens to support indigenous products, framing the campaign as a collective effort to achieve self‑reliance.
