Unpaid electricity bills are jeopardizing development projects in rural Telangana, according to local officials.

The lack of power has stalled construction of community centers, schools, and irrigation facilities that were slated to be completed by the end of the fiscal year. Without a reliable electricity supply, contractors are unable to operate machinery, and essential services such as water pumping stations remain offline.
State electricity board officials have cited a shortfall of over ₹200 crore in dues from rural districts, which has forced the board to divert funds from development budgets to settle the backlog. The board has urged local panchayats to clear outstanding payments to restore services.
In response, village leaders are demanding a review of the billing system and a temporary suspension of power cuts until the arrears are addressed. They argue that uninterrupted power is essential for the timely completion of projects that aim to improve living standards in the region.
