Police in Porbandar, Gujarat, have taken a local gang leader into custody on charges of raping his under‑age daughter.
Porbandar police announced on Tuesday that they have arrested a prominent local gang leader on suspicion of raping his minor daughter. The suspect was taken into custody at the Porbandar police station after a formal complaint was filed by the victim's mother, according to a statement released by the district superintendent of police.
The arrested individual is known to head a criminal outfit that has been under surveillance for extortion and illegal activities in the coastal district of Gujarat. While the police have not disclosed his name, they confirmed that the investigation is focused solely on the sexual assault allegation involving his daughter, who is reported to be under the age of 18.
Authorities said the case will be forwarded to the district court for trial, and the victim and her family will receive protection and counseling. The police have also warned that any attempts to tamper with evidence or intimidate witnesses will be met with strict legal action.
The incident has drawn attention to the prevalence of sexual crimes within family circles, prompting local NGOs to call for stronger child protection mechanisms in the region.
