A police team conducting a liquor raid in Belaganj, Gaya district was assaulted by villagers trying to free a detained trader, injuring six officers including an SI.
A police contingent entered the Belaganj area of Gaya district on Thursday to carry out a surprise raid on a suspected illegal liquor outlet. The operation was aimed at seizing contraband alcohol and detaining the shop owner who was alleged to be involved in illicit sales.
When the officers attempted to take the accused into custody, a large group of local residents gathered and forcefully intervened. The villagers, reportedly angered by the impending loss of a lucrative liquor business, tried to free the detained trader. In the ensuing clash, one Sub‑Inspector and five other police personnel sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police sources said that the team used non‑lethal measures to disperse the crowd, but the resistance escalated into a physical confrontation. Several villagers were also detained for assaulting the officers, and the seized liquor stock was secured by the police.
The district superintendent of police, while refusing to name the injured officers, confirmed that an investigation has been launched to identify those responsible for the mob attack and to ensure the safety of law‑enforcement personnel during future raids.
