Police in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, have detained ten individuals suspected of running an illegal liquor network after a series of deaths linked to spurious alcohol.
Dewas police announced the arrest of ten suspects on Tuesday, accusing them of operating an illicit liquor operation that is believed to have caused several recent deaths in the district. The arrests were made after a coordinated raid on multiple premises suspected of storing and distributing the illegal brew.
The investigation was triggered by reports of sudden fatalities among consumers who had ingested locally produced alcohol. Preliminary medical examinations indicated the presence of toxic substances, prompting authorities to launch a crackdown on unlicensed distillers.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajesh Kumar said the seized contraband included large quantities of moonshine, along with equipment used for illicit fermentation. He added that the detainees are being interrogated to uncover the full extent of the network and identify any additional collaborators.
The department has warned the public against consuming unregulated liquor and urged anyone with information on similar operations to come forward. Further legal action will be pursued under the state's excise and public health statutes.
