Authorities in Amritsar intercepted more than 23 kilograms of heroin, valued at about ₹115 crore, that had been smuggled from Pakistan via a drone.
Amritsar police, in coordination with the Border Security Force, carried out a large‑scale operation on the India‑Pakistan frontier early this week. The joint team seized a cache of heroin that had been flown across the border using an unmanned aerial vehicle.
Investigators recovered more than 23 kilograms of the narcotic, which officials estimate to be worth roughly ₹115 crore. The seizure was made after intelligence inputs indicated that a Pakistani smuggling network was employing low‑cost drones to bypass traditional checkpoints.
Senior police officials confirmed that the heroin was packaged in small containers and dropped at a pre‑identified spot on the Indian side of the border. The seized drugs have been handed over to the narcotics control laboratory for forensic analysis, and a criminal case has been filed against the alleged traffickers.
The operation underscores the growing challenge of aerial drug smuggling along the western border, prompting security agencies to enhance surveillance and inter‑agency coordination to curb such illicit activities.
