During his tour of Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a hydrogen‑fuelled train initiative aimed at greening India's rail network.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his multi‑state visit covering Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab, highlighted a new hydrogen‑powered train project as part of India's push for cleaner transport. The announcement came during a series of meetings with state officials where the focus was on sustainable infrastructure.
The hydrogen train concept envisions using fuel‑cell technology to replace diesel locomotives, thereby cutting emissions and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Officials said the pilot could be rolled out on select routes in the northern region, with the aim of demonstrating viability before a wider rollout.
The move aligns with the central government's broader clean‑energy goals and the railways' ongoing efforts to modernise its fleet. While detailed timelines were not disclosed, the project is expected to involve collaboration between Indian Railways, research institutions and private partners.
Stakeholders view the initiative as a step toward meeting international climate commitments and enhancing energy security. Further updates are anticipated as feasibility studies progress.
