PM inaugurates Meerut metro line, marking new era in city transport

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the first phase of Meerut's metro system on August 30, 2026, aiming to ease traffic congestion and boost connectivity.
New Delhi, August 30 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a ceremony in Meerut today to flag off the city’s first metro line. The event was held at the newly constructed terminal station, where the PM cut the ceremonial ribbon in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and senior railway officials.
The Meerut metro project, undertaken by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation, spans 27 kilometres and includes 22 stations linking the city’s industrial hub with residential neighborhoods. The first phase, slated to become operational by early 2027, is expected to serve around 200,000 passengers daily and reduce road traffic by an estimated 15 per cent.
During the launch, the Prime Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding urban mass‑transit infrastructure across tier‑2 cities. State officials reiterated that the metro will spur economic activity, create jobs, and improve air quality by encouraging a shift from private vehicles to public transport.
The inauguration marks the beginning of subsequent phases that will extend the network to the city’s outskirts and integrate it with regional rail services, further enhancing Meerut’s connectivity within the National Capital Region.
