According to a report cited by The Times of India, pedestrians represent one out of every three fatalities recorded in road accidents in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The data, compiled from recent traffic police records, highlights the disproportionate risk faced by those on foot in the city’s busy streets.
The finding underscores persistent challenges in urban traffic management, where rapid motorised growth often outpaces the development of safe walking infrastructure. Experts note that inadequate sidewalks, uncontrolled crossings and high vehicle speeds contribute to the elevated pedestrian death rate.
Municipal authorities have acknowledged the issue and indicated plans to improve pedestrian safety, including the installation of marked crossings, speed‑calming measures and public awareness campaigns. Traffic police have also stepped up enforcement of traffic rules to deter reckless driving near schools and market areas.
