Local officials said a Panchayat chief was attacked with a brick in a Tamil Nadu village during a heated argument over the provision of drinking water.
Witnesses reported that the dispute centred on the allocation of water from a community well, and the assailant threw the brick, striking the chief on the head.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries, confirming his death.
Police have registered a murder case and are searching for the attacker, while the village council has called for calm and a review of the water supply issue.
