The Pakistani government has announced a proposal to divide its four provinces into fifteen new administrative units, a move that could diminish the influence of established political families.
Islamabad – Federal authorities have unveiled a draft plan to restructure Pakistan's internal boundaries, breaking the current four provinces into fifteen smaller administrative units. The proposal, presented to the cabinet, outlines a phased implementation that would create new regional councils and devolve certain powers to local governments.
Analysts say the re‑organisation could curtail the traditional dominance of the Sharif and Bhutto dynasties, whose political networks have long been anchored to the existing provincial framework. By creating additional units, the government aims to dilute the concentration of influence that these families wield in Punjab and Sindh.
Senior bureaucrat Munir, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that the restructuring is intended to promote more balanced development and improve service delivery across the country. The plan is expected to be debated in parliament in the coming weeks, with the final decision pending legislative approval.
