Political leader Mohammed Akbaruddin Owaisi has called on Goa's Chief Minister to adopt a Uniform Civil Code model similar to Uttarakhand's, ahead of the state's upcoming elections.

Mohammed Akbaruddin Owaisi, the president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, has publicly challenged Goa’s Chief Minister to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) modeled after the one adopted in Uttarakhand.

The Uttarakhand model, introduced in 2014, seeks to replace personal laws with a single set of civil laws applicable to all citizens, irrespective of religion. Owaisi argues that such a framework would promote national integration and simplify legal processes.

Goa is gearing up for its next legislative assembly elections, and the issue of UCC has resurfaced as a point of contention among political parties. Owaisi’s call comes at a time when the state’s political landscape is becoming increasingly polarized over social and legal reforms.

While no official response has yet been issued by the Goa government, the challenge has sparked debate among lawmakers and civil society groups about the feasibility and timing of introducing a UCC in the state.
