Senior leader Asaduddin Owaisi has appealed to Law Minister Kiren Rijiju to intervene after the Waqf Board failed to act on a threatened mosque located close to the Prime Minister’s official residence.
New Delhi – Asaduddin Owaisi, a prominent political figure, has written to Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju requesting urgent assistance to protect a mosque situated near the Prime Minister’s official residence on Lok Kalyan Marg. Owaisi’s appeal comes after the Delhi Waqf Board, the statutory body responsible for the upkeep of Muslim religious properties, reportedly did not take any action despite the mosque’s deteriorating condition and growing concerns among local worshippers.
The mosque, which lies within a few hundred metres of the PM’s house, has been the subject of recent controversy over alleged encroachments and structural issues. Owaisi alleges that the Waqf Board’s inaction has left the place vulnerable, prompting him to seek direct intervention from the central government.
In his communication, Owaisi urged Minister Rijiju to order an immediate inspection and to facilitate necessary repairs or legal safeguards to ensure the mosque’s continued use. He emphasized that the site holds religious significance for the local community and that its preservation aligns with broader constitutional guarantees of religious freedom.
The Ministry of Law and Justice has not yet responded publicly. The matter is expected to be reviewed in light of the minister’s jurisdiction over religious property disputes and the Waqf Board’s statutory responsibilities.
Stakeholders, including local residents and religious leaders, await clarification on the steps that will be taken to address the board’s delay and to secure the mosque’s future.
