A verification exercise in Meghalaya found that more than seven out of ten registered voters align with the 2005 electoral rolls, with documentation now required only for those showing mismatches.
The Election Commission of India’s verification drive in Meghalaya has reported that over 70% of the state’s electors correspond exactly with the 2005 electoral rolls. The exercise, aimed at cleaning up the voter list ahead of upcoming polls, cross‑checked current voter details against the historic database.
Officials said that the high match rate indicates that the majority of voters have not changed their addresses or personal information since 2005. For the remaining electors where discrepancies were identified, the commission will request supporting documents to confirm identity and residence before updating the rolls.
The approach is intended to streamline the verification process by limiting paperwork to only those cases that need correction, thereby reducing the burden on voters and accelerating the finalisation of the electoral roll for the next election cycle.
