Parliamentary opposition parties have asked the government to substantiate Amit Shah’s statement that 3 crore people have entered India illegally, while the BJP says the figure is backed by a Security Intelligence Report.

The opposition benches in the Lok Sabha have formally requested the government to produce documentary proof for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent assertion that three crore individuals have entered India without legal permission. Leaders from several parties argued that such a large figure requires transparent verification before it can be used in public discourse.

Shah’s remark, made during a press briefing, warned that the alleged influx poses security and demographic challenges for the country. He did not disclose the source of the number, prompting critics to label the claim speculative.

In response, senior BJP officials defended the statement, stating that it is derived from a classified Security Intelligence Report (SIR) prepared by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The party maintained that the data reflects intelligence assessments and therefore cannot be disclosed in full.

No independent agency has yet been asked to audit the SIR, and the opposition reiterated that any claim affecting national policy must be supported by publicly available evidence.
