The draft Census 2027 questionnaire lists nine disability categories, while advocacy groups are urging the government to include all 21 recognized types.

The preliminary questionnaire for the upcoming Census 2027, released by the Office of the Registrar General, enumerates only nine categories of disability. Disability rights organisations have pointed out that India officially recognises twenty‑one distinct disability types under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, and they argue that the census should capture the full spectrum.

These groups contend that limiting the categories will lead to an under‑count of persons with disabilities, affecting policy planning, resource allocation and the accuracy of national statistics. They have submitted a formal request to the census authorities, asking for the inclusion of all recognised categories before the final form is printed.

The census, scheduled to commence in 2027, is a key source of demographic data used by central and state governments. Accurate disability data is essential for implementing welfare schemes, infrastructure accessibility measures and monitoring progress towards inclusive development goals.

The government has not yet responded publicly to the demands, but officials have indicated that the questionnaire is still under review and may be revised based on stakeholder feedback.
