A year after the severe floods that struck Pathankot’s border area on the night of Aug 26‑27, survivors are still awaiting promised relief payments.

The night of August 26‑27 last year saw a sudden surge of water inundate the border belt of Pathankot, Punjab, turning streets into rivers and displacing dozens of families. The flash flood, described by locals as “भयंकर” (terrifying), caused extensive damage to homes, agricultural fields and basic infrastructure.

In the weeks that followed, state authorities announced a compensation package for those affected, but the disbursement process has stalled. Many households report that the promised relief funds have not yet reached them, leaving them to cope with lingering losses and reconstruction costs.

Local representatives have repeatedly appealed to the Punjab government for expedited payments, citing the prolonged hardship faced by the victims. While some relief measures, such as temporary shelters and food distribution, were provided immediately after the disaster, the long‑term financial assistance remains pending.

As the anniversary approaches, community leaders are organizing a petition to press the administration for transparent timelines and swift settlement of the pending claims. The ongoing delay underscores the challenges of disaster recovery in remote border regions.

Officials have not disclosed a definitive schedule for the remaining payouts, and the affected families continue to await concrete action, hoping that the one‑year mark will finally bring the promised support.
