A Livemint analysis finds that 25% of Jan Dhan accounts are inactive, Uttar Pradesh tops the list of dormant accounts, and nearly 6 crore accounts hold zero balances.

A recent study by Livemint reveals that one out of every four Jan Dhan Yojana accounts across India is currently inoperative. The data, compiled from the Ministry of Finance’s latest portal statistics, indicates that 25% of the scheme’s beneficiaries are not actively using their accounts.

Uttar Pradesh emerges as the state with the highest number of dormant Jan Dhan accounts. While the report does not disclose the exact figure for the state, its share surpasses that of any other region, highlighting a concentration of inactivity in the nation’s most populous state.

In addition to the inactivity rate, the analysis shows that almost 6 crore Jan Dhan accounts have a zero balance. These accounts, though opened under the financial inclusion drive, have not seen any deposits since their creation, raising concerns about the scheme’s outreach and utilization.

Policy experts suggest that the government may need to intensify awareness campaigns and incentivize regular transactions to revive dormant accounts and ensure the intended benefits of the Jan Dhan Yojana reach the intended population.
