The Odisha government has released an action plan to meet the upcoming Solid Waste Management Rules slated for 2026, outlining steps for waste segregation, collection and processing across the state.

Bhubaneswar: The state of Odisha announced a comprehensive action plan aimed at complying with the Solid Waste Management Rules that will come into force in 2026. The plan, released by the state environment department, sets out a roadmap for improving waste segregation at source, strengthening collection systems and expanding processing facilities.

Key components include mandatory segregation of biodegradable and non‑biodegradable waste, capacity building for municipal bodies, and the introduction of monitoring mechanisms to ensure adherence to the new standards. The government also intends to promote public awareness campaigns to encourage citizen participation in waste reduction.

Officials said the plan aligns with national objectives to reduce landfill dependence and increase recycling rates, and will be rolled out in phases across districts. The initiative reflects Odisha's commitment to sustainable urban management ahead of the 2026 regulatory deadline.
